My story…….🌱🌿🍃

My passion for vegetable gardening goes right back to when we first immigrated to Australia from Holland. I was nine years old, and my father decided to dig over the entire backyard and shape the soil into garden beds. We bought some seeds and off we went into the exciting world of vegetable gardening. Coming from a cold climate and from high rise housing, we had no clue how to go about it, but luckily for us, the seeds came up and we gradually had a vegetable garden.

That was entirely built on good luck as the soil must have been decent enough to sustain growth and produce a yield. It was my introduction to gardening, but I certainly had to learn a few things along the way! Wherever I lived I had a vegie garden. It was something that always stayed with me over the years and now well into my sixties I’m as excited as ever to see my gardens grow.

When I was introduced to Permaculture, I took to it like a duck to water. Permaculture was a language I understood, it gave me plenty of thought on how to have better yields and efficiency. I fell in love with the whole concept of planning, designing, guild planting, water harvesting, composting, worm farming and so much more. My gardening life has become so much richer and satisfying as Permaculture has given me many tools to work with.

Over the years my gardening methods have become my own as I adapted to the vagaries of my land and soil. Every garden is different with its own set of challenges but with perma knowledge also comes a laid back and relaxed attitude as I know I don’t always have to follow standard gardening practices. This book has been designed to be a quick easy read with one clear message. When in doubt, add organic matter! For soil fertility add organic matter and for moisture conservation add organic matter, for pest control add organic matter. Do you get the idea?

Many gardening books will tell you to practice rotational gardening, companion planting and a myriad of other techniques but I have veered towards keeping everything jumbled up so as not to attract pests and disease. Having lots of added organic matter in the garden soil will become a buffer against pathogens as soil health keeps improving. My garden of seventeen years has become almost drought proof as when I run out of tank water by October here in Queensland, the plants just sit there for weeks without water. As soon as the rains come the plants perk up again only to continue growing again. Permaculture practices are not hard and fast but if you have thought things through and see the sense of what you are doing in the garden, then the results will come to you.

These days I have very little time to garden but there are always yields enjoy. Gardening kept simple but effective is the key to having success. You can make it as complex or as simple as you like, but most of all it ought to become a part of your daily life. Your vegetable gardens are a natural extension of yourself, after all you are what you eat.
